Travel: Otherness, Sameness

You’re with me in the Japan portion of a 10-day Can-Asian business trip.

Meetings all day, so just a brief note.

I write a lot about the “otherness” of travel, the differences from home that heighten the senses and make it worthwhile to rack up the kilometers. But of course, the rest of the world isn’t there to be theater for me; these people are living their lives while I observe.

And a good place to do that is the JR Bantan line local train from Himeji to Teramae. We get off at Amaji to visit the Miura factory.

Along the way, it’s good to realize that boyhood is boyhood everywhere. So are graphic novels (comic books for my generation) and pals and the relaxed joy of no school uniforms and being cool on the train.

Worth the kilometers for sure.
