The Minute

That first sip is tremendous. But it’s not about the caffeine.

It’s not even about coffee, really. You can get the same effect from sloshing a tea bag through microwaved water. The whole cappuccino part is just process.

For others, it might be a buttery bite of toast. Or sitting on the edge of the bed with a sock in one hand, pausing to look out the window and watch the sky lighten.

It’s about the one minute you take. The one in which you allow yourself to remember that whatever obligations you have taken on, you are one of them. There is a list of people you have decided to love, to serve, to take care of. You’re not first on the list. But you’re on it.

Take the nourishing minute. It turns into energy. Trust me.
